It stands to reason that non sealed chains found on small capacity bikes need lubricating but is motorcycle chain lube necessary on bigger bikes or is it just a scam to make us spend 15 on a can of grease.

Some people say you don t need to lube an o ring chain but they re missing the point. There isn t a chain on the market that doesn t require a small amount of maintenance from time to time. An o ring chain is a whole lot less needy. O ring chains also stretch less and last far longer than the standard chain.

These kinds of heavy duty chains are more expensive than open chains but last much longer and stretch. You either have an x z or o ring chain type and it s important to use that information when making a decision. Some lubes can be used on all chain types but make entirely sure it s the right one for you if you plan on going that route. Wire brushes and petrol are the enemy of motorcycle chains don t use them.

Of course the lube eventually dissipates and requires added lubrication but generally offers a longer lasting coating preventing premature wear as you power through mud sand and water which helps explain why the off road crowd prefers the o ring chain. This chain has little o rings between the link plates and rollers of the chain that are used to keep grease and lube inside of your chain while keeping dirt out. Most modern motorcycle chains are sealed with o rings or x rings some other fancy rubbery ring to keep grease inside the pins. O ring or x ring chains use small seals around the chain s rollers to hold lubricant in place.

It works well for both chains because these are made with similar polymers and have similar lubrication needs. The o ring is sealed and helps keep the pins lubed but the plates also need regular lubing or they ll oxidise stick and wear faster.

Note that like lots of manufacturers motorex offers road and off road formulas. After a long ride or a ride in pouring rain it s a good idea to squirt a bit of chain lube onto the chain to keep it lubricated.
