Typically the problem is the result of a missing or loose screw in the house door plate.
My lever handle fell off my front door.
Place the lever back on to the shaft using a 3 32 hex wrench tighten the screw through the lever and shaft.
If that escushion is smooth no screws in it there is probably a small set screw on the shank of the lever handle that holds it in place.
Over time a house door handle can come loose and come off.
That silver button is the set screw.
How you fix the problem depends on the design of your doorknob or lever and how it is fastened to the spindle and the door.

Thanks for the suggestion but there s no hole for a grub screw anywhere on the handle or the shaft.
This would be confirmed by looking at the interior lever where there is a set screw that is screwed out from the shaft to hold the lever using the hole in the lever.
There should be a tiny grub screw put in with an allen key it splays the split shaft spindle which grips the other handle my guess is its fell out.
The locking mechanism on the house door handle might fail to properly open and latch the door.
If you are experiencing the lever falling off the set screw is still in the shaft.
Sometimes the doorknob or lever loosens so it spins on its spindle while other times the lockset s mounting ring and faceplate become loose and pull away from the surface of the door.
1 find a place that sells antique doorknobs and spindles.
Looking at it there s a small hole in the lever and your first thought is that the set screw used to hold the lever in place came loose and fell off.
Try to leave the outside knob attached but if you can t that s okay.
Levers handles slide onto a rod assembly with a set screw.
2 remove both knobs and the spindle.
If you remove the lever and on one side of the shaft there is a hole and the other side there is a silver button.

When dealing with a lever door handle fixing the problem will require only the most basic of tools and about 10 minutes of time.
The exterior handle came off.
Depending in the brand of lockset that you have on the inside escushion the plate against the door there may be a couple of screws that hold the lockset in the door.
This screw fits in a groove on the round lever rod.
A loose doorknob of any kind is a nuisance and if left unfixed it will eventually fall completely off the door.
