My Front Door Lock Won T Turn

Lubricate the inside of the mechanism if the lock still does not function.

My front door lock won t turn.

Repairs range from making minor latch adjustments to repositioning the door. It will come in two pieces. A door knob lock button stuck has a few quick fixes that you can try out. Spray the door key with a graphite based lubricant.

If that is the problem it is easy to fix. In most cases a spritz of dry lubricant will be sufficient to free up the plug and allow you to open your door. Release the button quickly try sliding your finger off the button so the pressure is maintained up until the precise moment of release with no backing off. When a door latch doesn t click into position it usually means the latch and the strike plate are out of alignment.

Sometimes dust and dirt collect inside the lock cylinder. It should have at least a one inch throw and on the strike side there should be a security plate with screws at least three inches long. That can cause the pins to get stuck in a partially raised position and prevent the plug from turning. Leave the striker bolt in place.

When that happens the dirt can cause the pins to stick in a partially raised position preventing the plug from turning. Flip the key and open the door. Slide the key in the lock and tap lightly on the key to lubricate the inside of the lock. Warping if the door cannot physically lock due to the frame or door being warped an adjustment of the strike plate could rectify the problem without the need of a new lock.

Don t use a wet. Start by trying to push the lock button. You can spray a little dry lubricant in the lock to free up the plug so you can open the door. Outdoor locks can collect a lot of dirt and dust inside the lock cylinder.

Push and hold the button in. The best lock is a dead bolt that s properly installed. Remove the two screws one on either side of the handle and remove the knob.
